Lanzarote’s Architectural Style

The island of Lanzarote gets its architectural style from its mother land, Spain. Part of the Canary Islands located just off the north-west coast of Africa, Lanzarote has maintained a very typical Spanish style which, whilst not quite as distinctive as mainland Spain, still clearly displays evidence of its colonial past.

From the 8th Century, Spain was under the Moorish rule that dominated the Iberian Peninsular. During this period of Muslim occupation, Spain’s and therefore also Lanzarote’s architecture was heavily influenced by these north-African and Arabic rulers. Still giving the island’s distinctive style today are the Moors’ thick walled and low, flat-roofed buildings, with many hiding the typical Moorish feature of a secret, tiled patio.

Although most of these hidden, tiled patios are now privately owned, a fine example which can be viewed by the public is the Palacio de Marques in Teguise which dates from 1455. Not just as fine example of their patios, this house also happens to be the oldest building on the island and so is well worth a visit. Surrounded by a thick wall similar to dry-stone walling, these patios provided a cool and private area to rest during the hot summer days.

The island’s old capital of Teguise is the best place to also find great examples of Spanish Colonial style. As the old capital, at one point it was home to the island’s most prominent politicians and leaders, so spending a day walking around this old town is like stepping back in time. One notable building is the Palacio Spinola, a building which boasts intricately carved shutters as well as a rather superior internal balcony.

A typical traditional house in Lanzarote is only one storey high, and made from thick volcanic-rock walls which were painted to white to reflect the strong sun. This is one of my favorite camping recipe: baking potatoes on the campfire. Below are some of the most popular easy campfire baked potatoes recipes that you and your hungry little campers can enjoy.
