Heritage Hospice has a religious calling to provide a skillful, loving, and caring end of life experience to patients in Mississippi in a hospice setting, using their committed staff who work together to meet all the needs of their patients and caregivers. Hospice care is a special way of handling the period at the end of an ill person’s life. Once someone decides to stop receiving curative treatment, hospices provide palliative care. Palliative care is about the comfort of the patient and control of symptoms, and is not intended to artificially extend life.
Hospice care is not for everyone, and the caring and compassionate personnel of Heritage Hospice have a mission to assist caregivers of those patients for whom hospice is appropriate. Heritage Hospice provides hospice care primarily in the patient’s own home, both to care for the patient and to provide support and comfort to the patient’s caregivers, generally friends or family. Heritage Hospice also has arrangements with Mississippi hospitals to provide short-term care in the hospital setting when that type of care is appropriate, as in a crisis or when medical intervention is needed for symptom control.
Heritage Hospice uses interdisciplinary teams of medical and caring professionals. A typical case will use the services of physicians, social workers, nurses, clergy, home health aids, therapists, and volunteer workers. Together this team provides supportive care and also addresses the physical, social, emotional and spiritual needs of the patient and his or her caregivers. Heritage Hospice bases its operations on a spiritual belief and assigns great significance to the spiritual needs of their patients, always with a focus on the individuals needs of each patient.
In addition, Heritage Hospice provides bereavement care for the surviving family and friends, with trained counselors and volunteers who give support through visits, phone calls, and letters to the grieving family.
Heritage Hospice also holds regular family conferences so that caregivers and patients can stay apprised of the patient’s condition and what they can expect. Nobody likes to think about the end of life, but Heritage Hospice goes the extra mile in ensuring that the process of end of life care is done in a caring, compassionate, and respectful way.
