Male pattern baldness is genetic in nature – if a man’s father or one of his grandfathers lost their hair, chances are good that he will too (if he hasn’t already). The direct cause is an excess of dihydrotestosterone, a naturally occurring hormone in the human male body. This hormone causes the hair follicle to stop producing hair (the scalp itself is not affected).
Women are actually affected by hair loss as well. However, since the causes are different, women rarely suffer from bald spots. Thinning can result from a number of causes that include hormonal imbalance, toxins, and even damage caused by hair styling procedures and chemicals.
The good news is that it is all treatable, and even curable, thanks to the miracle of laser procedures. Dr. Sharon Keene, director of the Physician’s Hair Institute in Tuscon, Arizona, has been instrumental in the development of many of the surgical hair restoration techniques used today. After receiving her medical degree from the University of Minnesota, Dr. Keene went on to study General Surgery as well as hair loss and surgical hair restoration for seven more years. Eventually, she developed advanced techniques that are now used by hair restoration specialists throughout the world. This includes the design of unique, cutting-edge instruments that have greatly improved the safety and efficiency of hair grafting. One of the results of using these instruments is that the process remains in the hands of the physician actually performing the procedure, limiting the involvement of less-experienced assistants.
The procedure performed at the Physician’s Hair Institute is called Ultra Refined Incisional Follicular Unit Grafting. This involves the removal of permanent hair follicles, taken from the sides and back of the scalp where hair loss does not occur. These are called “donor follicles.” Dr. Keene transplants these on the bald areas, using follicular units of 1-4 hairs to create a natural look. Using her own patented instruments, Dr. Keene is able to transplant up to 70 follicle units per square centimeter. During two consecutive days of surgery, the doctor will transplant as many as 5,000 follicular units. Over the course of several months, these grafts mature and add density.
The result is a healthy, permanent, and natural looking new hairline. The fine, linear scars resulting from the procedure are covered by the new hair; those around the patient will never be able to tell that his new hair is anything but natural. In addition to scalp hair, Dr. Keene also offers eyebrow restoration.
Dr. Keene is a member of several prestigious societies, including the International Alliance of Hair Restoration Surgeons and the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery. While her extremely busy schedule of lectures has limited her practice to the Tuscon clinic (where she operates on no more than one patient in any given day), she maintains close collaborative ties with the Shapiro Clinic of Minnesota, and continues to train other hair restoration specialists in the techniques she has developed, so as to make them available to as many patients as possible who are seeking and can benefit from hair restoration surgery.
