drkracher-com.jpgThe practice of Dr. Gregory P. Kracher, O.D. focuses on general family optometry, fitting patients with the most up-to-date lenses fitted into the latest fashion eyewear.

Dr. Kracher has been a licensed optometrist in historic Frederick, Maryland since 1985, providing comprehensive eye care to local residents. He has devoted much of the past quarter-century to the study and application of contact lenses for patients who suffer from corneal irregularities such as keratoconus (a condition in which the cornea takes on a pronounced cone shape) and astigmatism caused by an eye injury or resulting from surgery.

For most of his career since earning his degree in optometry, Dr. Kracher has served at the Wilmer Eye Institute of the prestigious Johns Hopkins Hospital, where he was Director of Contact Lens Service, and also works as a consultant for the National Eye Institute. This experience has placed Dr. Kracher at the forefront of ocular research.

Dr. Kracher begins with a comprehensive eye examination that includes refraction and retinoscopy in order to find the ideal prescription for the patient’s lenses; measurement of intraocular pressure (known as tonometry) so as to assess the patient’s risk of glaucoma; and a detailed examination of the interior of the eye. Special attention is given to patients who have cataracts or who have had some type of laser surgery.

In addition to contact lens evaluation and fittings, Dr. Kracher offers vision correction with laser eye surgery. This is a field in which he has worked almost since its inception, and was one of the pioneers in the research and development of laser surgical techniques. He is a certified Laser Refractive Consultant for TLC Laser Eye Centers, a national, publicly-traded company that offers LASIK procedures. Because of recent advances in this field, patients who in the past may not have been eligible for laser eye surgery may now be viable candidates; those who are interested in this type of surgery as an alternative to corrective lenses are encouraged to contact Dr. Kracher.

Those for whom laser surgery is not an option will find a wide selection of high-quality, stylish lenses, which are fitted with lenses crafted by the finest laboratories in the industry. Whether one’s tastes lean toward contemporary or traditional, plastic or metal, lightweight or sturdy, Dr. Kracher will see that patients are fitted with the eyeglasses best suited to their tastes and lifestyles.
